Style // Charity Shop Dungarees

So, some blue velvet dungarees have somehow made their way into my wardrobe. How utterly peculiar! Nothing at all to do with a mini pre-christmas splurge, nope. I'm still not sure how I feel about dungarees in general yet, but that's probably why I like them. You know that feeling when you ask someone what your outfit looks like, they're not sure, so it makes you want to to wear it all the more? I know I'm a little stubborn, but that can't be just me?

Back to dungarees... wearing them, part of me feels like a glorious celebrator of 90s girl power, in a Kingdom where Clarissa (explaining it all) sits on the throne as the ultimate 90s babe. The other part of me feels like I should be auditioning for the stage version of Of Mice and Men. And, I'm not sure I can pull off the Southern Belle look.

For whatever reason, I haven't found the right occassion to wear these blue velvet dunga-dreams yet. They are beautiful and the reason I haven't worn then is probably more because of the weather fuelling a craving for warm things + jeans, rather than dungarees apprehension. After all, they're not my first pair...

The pair above are an old, vintage pair. I found them in Cow, Sheffield and completely fell in love with the colour, pattern and slouchy fit. In a dark navy and muted peach (a formidable colour combo), they look cute in the summer and work as winter florals. They're also falling apart to the point of no repair. Buttons are missing, one of the shoulder straps has fallen off and is vicariously held together with a pin... in fact, it's safe to say my dignity is preserved by an artful arrangement of safety pins. One day I'll get the sewing machine out and give them the rightful repair that they deserve. I teamed them here with a white chiffon and lace blouse and some winter-appropriate deniers.

Talking of velvet, James found this velvet beaut in a charity shop a couple of months ago. Again in a dark blue tones (...always unintentionally co-ordinating) with lovely, embroidery detailing across the front. I've been trying to steal it for a while. I'm gonna have to sacrifice something that's worth a swap! So, what is the general consensus on dungarees?

Much love,
Lauren

Journal // soft focus + bright lights

Admittedly, I've been a bit lazy with my photographs recently. I'm blaming the weather. I love holding weighty cameras loaded with real roles of film but with the limited hours of daylight (outside of a 9-5 job) and plummeting temperatures, it's just not an option. Instead, I've lazily opted for convenient iphone snaps,  mostly taken from the comfort of my (warm) home, drenched in that heavenly, artificial light that us bloggers just adore. It's my ode to you, dear readers that I shall endeavour to improve this bleak situation as the sunshine comes rolling in. One of my goals for 2013 is to hone these skills...minimising the ratio of blurry images to good'ens whilst using the Olympus OM1  - or at least trying to make them look like artfully blurry ;) -  and actually get my Diana F+ lomo out the box more than once a year. In the meantime, here's some dreamy soft focus images that I can't stop staring at over on pinterest...

Style // Eye Spy Eye Candy

"Ahh, the bright, white light of the snow is blinding thine eyes," said the girl, as a pathetic excuse to whip out her eye gems...

Hey fit sunglasses, I spotted your sibling on pinterest a while ago. Unfortunately, "fit sunglasses on pinterest” was the only information I had to help me find you wondrous, beings (pictured at the top). I decided it would be my quest to locate you. In the beginning the operation appeared futile, the internet was so vast and the clues were minimal.

Eventually a year passed, in which I spent lamenting the notion that I just might never find you.

Then one day, (like, Thursday last week) everything changed. It started with a procrastination fuelled browse on twitter; a headline from River Island about their new season stock, an intrigued click, and then the glorious chorus of birdsong as my eyes feasted on some (pretty similar) spectacles. River Island, I might just kiss you.

You can find everything else I'm eyeing up on the jewellery front, here.

Much love,
Lauren

Travel // Berlin

With every camera roll, there's always a bunch of photos taken with indifference -  an impatient attempt to use up the film. Below, is a few of ours from our trip last year to Berlin. Unlike the others (you know, the boastful bunch that proudly illustrate all the wonderful sights that were seen, shrouded in dreamy colours and complete with lots of smily, happy, "we're on holiday" faces) these photos sit in their packets, quietly forgotten. Looking back, I kinda love them. Documenting a industrial, rough around the edges glimpse of the city, the snaps were taken on our train trips from shiny, glistening West Berlin to Schoenefeld airport. Oh! - that city...

All images: Anthropologie

If I could marry Anthropologie's homewear collections, I think I probably would. I'd quite happily spent the rest of my life kept at home as a housewife (from looking at the price tag they'd earn enough to keep me), admiring their perfect, exteriors. Just look at their sickeningly, pretty faces! I'm definitely couldn't justify the cost in buying a set of those babes but once we have the rest of the essentials, surely one special treat plate for serving should be on the menu? One thing I have taken away from all this lusting is some pretty spectacular colour combinations. I used the colour code generator app (mentioned in this post) to grab the pantones from the plates and voila, interior inspirations!

Collecting bits and bobs for moving house is fun. We have loads of lovely bits all packed away now - I should really get a medal for my patience in not opening anything, my mum bought me a beautiful tea set for christmas 2011 that's just been sat unopended all this time! Unpacking them all into our new space will feel amazing.

We picked up Jamie Oliver's new 15 min meals book after watching the programme (hooray for January sales)... I'd recommend trying the falafal wraps with grilled veg , the combination of the falafel, sweet peppers, spring onions, picked red cabbage and parsley, mmmmm. Divine. We made it with Tzatziki instead of the chillied cottage cheese, and psst, there's a link to the recipe here.

On the subject, has anyone got any idea about paint that can be used on wooden cooking utensils? Really want to try a version of the painted wooden serving boards that Jamie used in the series -  preferably, without the risk of paint-poisoning! Don't know too much about it myself, what's safe to use or where to get it from...? If anyone has any tips, feel free to give us an email (link on our contact page) or leave a comment, it'd be very much appreciated :) I'll post a DIY up if I manage to figure it out!

Much love,
Lauren

Style // Spaceball Richochet

Untitled
Hey! How is everyone out there, bellies all stocked up on mulled wine for the coming year? It's been a while since I've taken the time to put thoughts to blog post, just been so excited to welcome in 2013 (love odd numbers) and I've been all caught up in the glittering, festivities of Christmas! Well that, and the fact that I was presented with a few new pretty journals to start scribbling in so tip-tapping away on a keyboard isn't quite cutting it at the moment. The dreaded moment of taking the Christmas tree down has also seems to have sparked an invigorated interest in all things sparkly and, after eyeballing it for the past month, I was so (sooooo) excited to find this blouse in the dahlia sale. A gorgeous deep khaki green colour with banging tarnished, gold glittered sleeves. Wearing it I feel like David Bowi, so I'm probably going to wear it every single day.

Blouse - Dahlia;  Shorts - Topshop

The shorts made a ostentatious entrance to my wardrobe a couple of months ago. I've since fallen in love with their seductive oxblood hue and managed to unintentionally create a crimson saturated uniform for myself with the aid of a few jewels and accessories.

Aside from the sleeves, another fab thing about this shirt is the ever so subtle way that the shape flares out towards to the bottom... not noticable enough to be cape-like but just enough to allow a girl to swoosh around a bit.
Dahlia, you did good.

Pocketwatch Necklace - Eclectic Eccentricity

If you haven't already checked out EE's collections, do so, now. Scouring vintage markets for treasures and trinkets, they piece together gems and weave in some stories to make the most perfect jewellery. The piece i'm wearing is a fully working pocket watch necklace. It's so beautiful, encased in dark wood  with a visible mechanism on the back (if you're a fan of how things work...) and rose quartz detail on the chain. Pretties up 'owt.

I'm slowly persuading myself to step out of the A/W attire, the other day I immersed myself in a full on ankles-out situ' and wore 3/4 length printed trousers to work. Enjoyed the rebellion against winter. Instantly regretted when it came to popping out for lunch. Whatcha all been wearing to welcome in the new year?

Much love,
Lauren
